Tis the Devil's plant! [Nov. 3rd, 2009|09:50 pm]
[Tags|, ]

Did you know that in 1604, King James I and VI of England and Scotland published an anti-smoking pamphlet? He even warns about the danger to the lungs from second-hand smoke.

So, there's the King James Bible. There's the King James anti-smoking pamphlet. There are King James' sonnets. There's even a King James demonology. Personally, though, I wish there were King James versions of every type of book. King James' Fairy Tales! The King James Mysteries! The King James Cookbook!

What? Fritz Lang made films of color? [Nov. 2nd, 2009|06:19 pm]
[Tags|, ]

Fritz Lang is best known as a Weimar director. Chief among his films are M, famous as the debut of Peter Lorre, and Metropolis, famous for being awesome. His two-film "Indian Epic" from 1959 was his first German production since fleeing from the Nazi government in 1934.

Enjoy the dance. ;)

The graffiti present in Pompeii in 79 AD, catalogued

There's something charmingly contemporary about the focus on sex and scatology that dominates these. One that I really like, though, is the woman who carved into a wall of her house "I don’t want to sell my husband, not for all the gold in the world".

Joker impersonator kills woman and two infants [Jan. 24th, 2009|02:22 pm]
Twenty year old Belgian man in Joker makeup goes on killing spree in a Dendermonde daycare

Eleven children under the age of three years and two female staff were stabbed and survived. The killer supposedly has no record of psychiatric institutionalization. My mind is boggled... I have no idea what to make of it.

Welcome to 1933 [Jan. 9th, 2009|02:45 pm]
Barbed-wire fences and security guards are a regular part of many [Danish] Jewish children's school day

From the Copenhagen Post:

A number of school administrators have come forth in recent days to confirm that they recommend Jewish children should not enrol at their schools.

According to school administrators, law enforcement officials and social workers, the on-going conflict in Gaza has led to heightened tensions between Jews and Arabs - particularly Palestinians - here in Denmark.

And although few headmasters of schools have faced the situation, most of those at schools with a high percentage of children of Arab descent say they try to prevent Jewish parents from enrolling their children there.

On Monday, headmaster Olav Nielsen of Humlehave School in Odense publicly admitted he would refuse Jewish parents' wish to place their child at his school.

The comments were made following an incident last week in which two Israeli citizen's were shot and wounded at a city shopping centre. Police believe the incident was a reaction to the Gaza conflict.

Other headmasters have now come forth to support Nielsen's position, adding that they are putting the child's safety first.

At Caroline Skole in Copenhagen's Østerbro district, video cameras watch over the playground and entrances of the school, which is surrounded by a 2.5 metre-high barbed-wire fence.

One parent whose child goes to the Jewish school said thinking about the extra security can be disturbing at times, but she felt it was necessary.

Rabbi Bent Lexner called the headmasters' concern 'theoretical. In reality, Jewish parents would never try to enrol their child in those schools.'

Frankly, the Danes should be ashamed of themselves. October 1943 is still within living memory. Within living memory of the Holocaust, the sentiment of the phrase "Never again" is progressively narrowing from "Never again will we stand by while a people is ethnically cleansed from where their forefathers dwelt" to "We've stood by while some genocides have been carried out, but we will tolerate no more pogroms against Jews" to "Never again will we stand by if white people carry out a pogrom against Jews". If that sounds harsh, remember that we've done nothing to punish Pakistan for Mumbai.

I have absolute confidence that the day will come when all children in the West will live in nations where all are judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. Those children will read history books, and they will view with disgust anyone who criticized the victims for making war against their murderers. That the latter were poorer and "browner" will be no excuse. I now believe that history will not judge the current peace movement as it has the Vietnam War protests, but like the America First movement Charles Lindbergh promoted.

Stupid body [Dec. 30th, 2008|11:41 pm]
Fell asleep at 8:00 PM last night (the 29th). Woke up at 1:30 AM. Was nodding off well before 8:00 tonight, so I crawled into bed around then. So my body decided I didn't need a full night's sleep... two hours would do. Less than 8 hours sleep in the last 48 produces a nervous, groggy, heavy-eyed state, yet going back to bed does not lead to sleep. This is becoming a "could neither sit, nor stand, nor lie" situation.

I hope I'm not developing insomnia. That'd be bad.

Behold, anime Zorro! [Sep. 19th, 2008|10:28 pm]
Seen via [info]someidiot.

Yes, Zorro has a henshin sequence.
Yes, he has a Sailor Mini-Zorro (that's supposed to be Bernardo).
Yes, they made his black horse white.
Also, who knew all Spaniards were blonde? (It's been pointed out elsewhere that the idea of Zorro fighting to avenge the lower castes is seriously obfuscated by making everyone and their horse blonde.)

Most grandiose royal title? [Sep. 15th, 2008|12:28 am]
What dynasty in history has claimed the most overblown title for its monarchs?

The Pahlavi dynasty could boast "Shahanshah" and "Aryamehr" (King of Kings and Aryan Light).
The Hindu Shahi kings of Kashmir and eastern Afghanistan prefixed their names with "Parambhattaraka Maharajadhiraja Paramesvara Sri" (Overlord, Great King of Kings, Overgod, Holy [name]).
That may or may not beat the Solomonic dynasty of Ethiopia's "His Imperial Majesty, Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah, King of Kings of Ethiopia and Elect of God". It's a contest between "Overgod" and being the lion of some other ethnic group.

McCain picks his running mate [Aug. 29th, 2008|02:20 pm]
The Republican VP nominee will be Alaska Governor Sarah Palin

This seems like a brilliant decision. Choosing a woman was the smartest thing he could do after the simmering Hillary kerfluffle. However, the most important consideration was that anyone who wasn't pro-life would have delegates revolting on the convention floor. Plus voters have consistently liked Governors better than Senators (this election will mark the first time since January 1961 a Senator has moved into the White House).

Governor Palin has five children: Track, Bristol, Willow, Piper, and Trig Paxson Van Palin. I have no idea why two of them are named after things you do in high school.

So there was this... thing posted to 4chan's wallpaper board without attribution. It's a splash image of nearly a hundred Legend of Zelda characters drawn in a minimalistic, rather Genndy Tartakovsky cartoon style. Does anyone know who did this? It seems too intricate to just be fanart, but if it is, wow. ([info]someidiot, you should appreciate this.)

Yes, unfortunately his appearance hasn't gotten any more majestic and less cuddly since the first movie. The titular prince is pretty vacant, as well.
